Ash Sutton turned the 2026 British Touring Car Championship season opener at Donington Park into one of the most improbable 24 hours of his career, recovering from a Qualifying Race gravel trap on Saturday to sweep the final two races on Sunday and march out of Leicestershire as the championship leader.
The four-time BTCC champion had looked in trouble on Saturday afternoon. Contact with long-time title rival Tom Ingram during the Qualifying Race spat Sutton's NAPA Racing UK Ford Focus into the Redgate gravel, consigning him to a start from the back of the field for Sunday's opening Round 2.
Sutton's response was immediate. He carved through the pack to finish second in race one, including a multi-lap duel with Charles Rainford that produced some of the best overtaking of the weekend. His progress set up a front-row start for Round 2, and he converted it into his first victory of the season by taking the lead into Redgate on the opening lap and never relinquishing it to the flag.
Race three brought the season's most fitting headline. Sutton was starting his 300th BTCC race — a milestone only a handful of drivers in the championship's 67-year history have reached — and lined up eighth on the partially reversed grid. He stormed through the midfield, hunted down long-time leader Ricky Collard and took the lead in the closing stages. The win, his second of the day and his landmark 300th-start victory, sent NAPA Racing UK out of Donington with a first 1-2 of the season and Sutton out of the paddock leading the drivers' standings.
"What a day!" Sutton said after the final race. "24 hours ago, we were sat in the gravel trap so to turn this around is awesome. The car has been on fire, we also got a first one-two of the season for NAPA Racing UK, so it's just been an incredible day."
The weekend also had a sting in the tail for Sutton's Sunday rivals. Tom Ingram, the Excelr8 Hyundai driver who beat Sutton to a Qualifying Race spot initially and won the opening race on the road, was stripped of his victory late on Sunday evening after scrutineers flagged a fuel-flow issue traced to the championship's new boost system. The disqualification elevated the podium a place and reshuffled the opening points.
Combined with his two wins, Sutton's Donington haul leaves him atop the championship after the opener with Stephen Jelley of Team BMW shadowing him. That is an advantage Sutton has rarely squandered across his title-winning seasons, and NAPA Racing UK — now in their second full campaign with Ford Focus machinery after switching from Infiniti — have served notice that the hybrid-era BTCC pecking order sits very much with the 2024 and 2025 runner-up now aiming to reclaim the crown.
Twelve weeks and eight more rounds will determine whether Sutton's turnaround becomes a title run. Brands Hatch Indy hosts Round 2 of the championship in three weeks' time, and the four-time BTCC champion arrives as the man to beat.
