Broc Feeney will carry a commanding championship lead into the betr Darwin Triple Crown on 19-21 June, the Red Bull Ampol Racing driver heading to the Top End in ominous form as the title fight begins to take shape.
Feeney stretched his advantage to 90 points over second-placed Matt Payne after a dominant Tasmania finale, and now holds a 173-point buffer over Brodie Kostecki, whose championship hopes have unravelled spectacularly. Kostecki has shed 234 points across the last four races, a slump that has reshaped the standings and left the reigning contenders scrambling.
The championship leader was almost bewildered by his rival's misfortune, even as he insisted his focus remained firmly on his own campaign.
"Obviously, probably a couple of unlucky instances for him, especially yesterday," Feeney said of Kostecki's run. "Well, probably a couple that have certainly been out of his control. But it just shows how tight this sport is."
Feeney was wary of reading too much into the points swing, knowing how quickly fortunes can turn in Supercars.
"From my side, I can't worry about what's happening with everyone else," he said. "But, yeah, obviously crazy to know that. Swings and roundabouts, that's for sure."
Darwin's Hidden Valley Raceway will host a significantly expanded event this year, with Supercars racing across all three days for the first time at the Triple Crown. A new Friday afternoon sprint over 100km kicks off the on-track action, mirroring the format used at Sydney and Townsville, before the traditional longer races on Saturday and Sunday. In total the revamp adds 60 extra kilometres of racing to the weekend, with Boost Mobile Top Ten Shootouts setting the grids on both Saturday and Sunday.
The Triple Crown itself is decided on points accumulated across all three races, with the highest tally claiming the prize. It is a format that played directly into Feeney's hands twelve months ago, when he swept all three races to take the honour in dominant fashion — a clean sweep he will be eager to repeat as he looks to tighten his grip on the championship.
The expanded program extends beyond the main game. The DUNLOP Super2 Series makes its first appearance at Darwin, joining Porsche Carrera Cup, Trans Am and Territory Sedans on a bumper support bill, while off-track activations including the NTI Transporter Parade on 17 June and the return of Track to Town on 18 June round out one of the biggest festivals on the calendar.
For Feeney, the equation is simple: extend the lead and pile further pressure on a chasing pack already struggling to keep pace. For Payne, Kostecki and the rest, Darwin represents an urgent opportunity to halt the runaway leader before his advantage becomes insurmountable.
