The 2026 INDY NXT by Firestone season has delivered unpredictable racing through its opening four rounds, with three different winners representing three separate teams establishing early parity in the championship hunt.
Cape Motorsports Powered by ECR's Nikita Johnson has seized control of the standings with victories at St. Petersburg's season opener and the first Barber Motorsports Park race. The 17-year-old Florida native has secured three podium finishes in four starts, with his worst result being sixth place at Arlington.
Johnson's dominant early performance marks a significant shift from last season's predictable start, when Andretti Global teammates Dennis Hauger and Lochie Hughes combined to win the first six races of the campaign.
Andretti Global's Max Taylor has emerged as Johnson's primary challenger, trailing by just 23 points in the standings. The 18-year-old Connecticut driver captured the Arlington street race victory and has posted two runner-up finishes. Taylor nearly achieved four consecutive top-two results before contact with Alessandro de Tullio in Barber's first race dropped him to 19th place.
HMD Motorsports rookie Tymek Kucharczyk has provided remarkable consistency, becoming the only driver to secure top-five finishes in all four races. The 20-year-old Polish driver sits third in points, trailing Johnson by 33 markers after placing third at St. Petersburg, Arlington, and Barber's opening race, plus fifth in Barber's finale.
AJ Foyt Racing's Alessandro de Tullio has shown impressive qualifying pace with three consecutive pole positions but struggled to convert that speed into consistent results. His breakthrough victory in Barber's second race remains his only top-five finish, as contact incidents at Arlington and in Barber's opener have hampered his championship aspirations.
The season's competitive balance has created unexpected struggles for several 2025 championship contenders. Lochie Hughes entered the campaign as the top returning driver after winning twice and finishing third in points last season with Andretti Global.
Hughes' disappointing start has seen him manage only fifth-place finishes at St. Petersburg and Arlington as his best results. Poor showings at Barber, where he finished 12th and 16th, have left him seventh in points and 76 positions behind Johnson.
ABEL Motorsports with Force Indy's Myles Rowe faces similar championship pressure after his strong 2025 campaign that produced two victories and a fourth-place points finish. Despite returning with the same team, Rowe sits ninth in the standings, 81 points behind the leader, with a fifth-place finish at Barber representing his season's high point.
Garcia's worst result over those two dominant seasons was ninth place, making his current 14th-place championship position particularly puzzling. His lone top-10 finish came with a fourth-place result in Barber's opening race, while three other starts have yielded 12th place or worse.
The championship battle will continue when the series visits Indianapolis Motor Speedway's road course for a doubleheader weekend May 8-9. Race 1 is scheduled for 4 p.m. ET Friday on FS2, while Race 2 will air at 2:30 p.m. ET Saturday on FS1, with both races also available on FOX One, the FOX Sports app, and INDYCAR Radio powered by OnlyBulls.
The Indianapolis road course doubleheader will test whether the early season's competitive parity continues or if established championship contenders can reassert themselves in the 24-car field.
