Williams will not be tinkering with its driver line-up any time soon. James Vowles has delivered an emphatic backing of Carlos Sainz and Alex Albon, insisting he has "zero doubt" they are the pair to lead the team towards its long-term title goals.
As silly season gathers pace up and down the grid, the Williams principal chose certainty over caution, framing his drivers as central to a rebuild that he believes will eventually carry the storied team back to the front.
"[There is] zero doubt in my mind that this is the pairing that I want," Vowles said.
He conceded that rumours come with the territory, but argued the team's fate was its own to shape. "They are aware of it. You will always get silly season but it's in our hands both today and in the next five years to demonstrate we have ability to put performance on the car that outstrips other teams and therefore earn their right to be here."
Vowles was strikingly open about how testing the recent past has been, and the daily effort it took to keep his drivers engaged. "It was a tough winter. I called them pretty much daily on here's where we are and here's what's changing," he said.
That loyalty, he made clear, has run both ways. "They were there by our sides all the way through and that's really important to me. They were asking the right questions and asking me: 'What else can I do?'" he said, praising the way both men have capitalised on chances. "Every time we have had points to pick up — Miami or even before that Shanghai — they are there and ready to do it."
The bigger picture, as ever with Vowles, is measured in years rather than races. "'28 is one of our big milestones, 2030 the second of those two milestones — and championships towards 2030. It doesn't change that direction of travel," he said.
He admitted the rebuild has thrown up more problems than expected, but refused to treat any of them as terminal. "It's frustrating. I have discovered more issues than I would have liked. They are all fixable. It's a blip in the road," he said.
By binding Sainz and Albon to his 2028 and 2030 targets, Vowles is asking both drivers to commit to a journey that stretches far beyond the current midfield scrap — and warning rivals that neither seat is up for grabs. The destination he keeps coming back to is unambiguous: championships by the end of the decade, with the same two drivers still on board.
